[SOLVED] Day 181: Dannybuntu is Not in the Sudoers File! How to Edit Sudoers File

My Ubuntu Hardy is too unresponsive. It takes too long to respond to clicks, specially in Firefox 3. Running all of these in an old Pentium III 650 Mhz with 256 MB RAM slowly though, is acceptable since the hardware is really old. However, I will not accept that Windows XP can perform better on the same machine. I tried Yoper, which is what I found after I googled for the terms "fastest linux". However, I wasn't able to install it since it didn't detect my keyboard. I don't know the problem so it just didn't work out. So I went back to good ole cranky Debian. The whole surface of the Debian CD is literally coated with dust but it still worked.

I know I have installed Debian a bazillion times already, but along the way I forgot certain things that are peculiar to its use. I tried to install pppoeconf via the cli but here is what happened:

daniel@debian:~$ sudo apt-get install pppoeconf
[sudo] password for daniel:
daniel is not in the sudoers file. This incident will be reported.

So I googled for the terms "add user to sudoers file" and got transported here. I then did the following:

daniel@debian:~$ visudo
-bash: visudo: command not found
daniel@debian:~$ sudo visudo
[sudo] password for daniel:
daniel is not in the sudoers file. This incident will be reported.
daniel@debian:~$ su
Password:
debian:/home/daniel# visudo

In visudo I saw this:

# /etc/sudoers
#
# This file MUST be edited with the 'visudo' command as root.
#
# See the man page for details on how to write a sudoers file.
#

Defaults env_reset

# Uncomment to allow members of group sudo to not need a password
# %sudo ALL=NOPASSWD: ALL

# Host alias specification

# User alias specification

# Cmnd alias specification

# User privilege specification
root ALL=(ALL) ALL

I needed to put my username below root ALL=(ALL) ALL, I entered into edit mode and put daniel ALL=(ALL) ALL just below. I used this cheat sheet by the way. I saved my work and yes, now I can use sudo.

Mwahahahaha!!!!!!

Ah, a Fresh Install of Ubuntu Hardy 8.04 + Wine 1.0 RC 5 + WineTools [UNSUCCESSFUL] and MS Money 2004

I just got my free Ubuntu Hardy Heron CD from Canonical. I must say that I am really impressed. From a Linux newbie like myself, I would say hands down, Ubuntu Hardy is a very significant improvement over the previous versions. I specially like the wallpaper. Very very well thought out art. I am keeping the default wallpaper.

You might be surprised that dannybuntu only installed Hardy now. But well, you know, I have been playing with Debian for so long that I missed my good ole buddy Ubuntu. ;)

I am going to keep a log of what I did here, so feel free to ignore the succeeding text:

According to AppDB, Microsoft Money 2004 was supposed to be Gold. But I guess I am getting ahead of myself since I am using Wine 1.0 RC5. Sigh, I really like this application.

Firefox Download Day!

It's Firefox Download Day! It's June 17, here in the Philippines so prepare to clog your ISPs with something aside from downloading torrents.

To me Firefox is about "We can beat the EVIL EMPIRE!"

Hoorah!

Wine-Reviews' New Home and Wine Nears 1.0

Our friend twickline and his team over at wine-reviews is moving from blogspot to their own domain. What is WINE? Wine is a Windows Compatibility Layer - basically something that lets you run a lot of Windows applications and games on Linux.

Their website is black. Which is good for the green the web movement. And it is also green. Nice choice of colors.

On other news, Wine nears its quest for the one point oh. June 20, girls and boys. June 20. What does it mean? Well, basically it means buh-bye MS Windows.

The Future is OPEN.

Banshee 1.0 Released

Banshee is a free audio player for GNU/Linux operating systems, that is built upon Mono and Gtk#. It uses the GStreamer multimedia platform for encoding, and decoding various music formats, including Ogg Vorbis, MP3 and FLAC. Banshee can play, import, and burn audio CDs, and supports many portable media players, including Apple's iPod and Creative's ZEN players, in the current (May 23, 2008) version. Music stored on the iPod can be played without synchronization, and album art stored in the Banshee library is transferred to the iPod. Support for MTP and PlaysForSure devices, as well as the Rio Karma player is planned for the near future.

From Wikipedia

From dannybuntu debian newbie's perspective. At the start, this Banshee thing looks a little like Rhythmbox. Except that it has some functions akin to Amarok. So it must be an Amarhythmbox!

Like Rhythmbox it has a very simple you can't miss it interface. Like Amarok it has nifty plugins that work magic on the music player if you are connected to the Internet.

Another feature is the Recommended Artists feature which gives you a list of music artists that have a similarity to the artist that you are currently listening to.

It also shows you the top album of an artist that you have selected. Perfectly designed for you to buy music online.

I guess after 1.0 they would probably add more bling to this yet another music player.

One thing I would commend regarding this project is its great launching. Nice name, many packages for the different flavors of Linux (Hahaha! It's in Lenny now! Downloadable via aptitude)

Oh, well I guess they should add this to the list.

Filipino Isa Kang Alipin!! (Filipino You are a Slave!!)

My father wrote this book a few years before he died. Where other families of the deceased try to make a profit of the written works of their parents, we decided that this is so political and good that you cannot place a monetary value to it. It was a labor of love.

As humans, we tend to try to place value on love by buying diamonds or buying gifts for loved ones. The values of which are all finite. Monetary value is finite. You cannot say that this diamond is worth a quatrabazookaquadradridriquantitilion bazagillliontrillionsmhillion mikotilliongrillion pikolion or so. Though even that amount is finite.

In short, a work of love is priceless.

Therefore I put it somewhere where hopefully it would be read by all freely. I only ask that should it be quoted, please cite accordingly.

There are many positive reviews of it: which I would like to put here whenever Google lets me find them all. Comments about the book are welcome here in my personal blog as the Filipino Isa Kang Alipin blog in my belief should be preserved in its book form.

If you want a copy, please feel free to drop by anytime and I would gladly give you a free copy.

Sa ngalan po ng aking yumaong ama na si Atty. Reynaldo Cruz Garcia, maraming salamat po sa inyong lahat! Mabuhay ang Marangal na Pilipino!

Google Trends Matchup of the Day: Ubuntu vs. Windows XP

I call this Episode 6: the Return of the Jedi. Ubuntu is neck to neck with Windows XP at least in terms of Internet Google Hype.

Go Ubuntu!
