Ubuntu Again...

It's that time of the year when users of Ubuntu all get to ask:

"Is this going to run my video card? Or do I have to stalk the Nvidia forums to coerce a poor hapless soul to give instructions on compiling the NVIDIA kernel?"

Well, I have to find out on my own.

How Long Did it Take You to Earn Your First Dollar Online?

It took me five painful years. I even invested some money in the amount of $2,790.5 USD in a bogus company. How much did I earn from that? Nada, Zilch, Zero.

So when did I earn my first online dollar? It was last Feb. 22, 2010. I actually earned $20.00 from a woman named Conextra. Well, that's not really her name. She paid me to write about watches. I met her via Freelancer.com.

I was happy because I didn't spend anything to earn that first dollar. Temujin, an IT Consultant friend of mine gave me that tip for free and the rest is history.

How about you?

HowTo: Withdraw Money From Freelancer.com to Moneybookers.com to Unionbank or BPI

I've promised Temujin that I would make a "Moneybookers HowTo" so here it is.

Moneybookers is the absolute best alternative to Paypal. If it is more universally accepted, I would say that it is even better than Paypal. With it, you could receive and transfer money to your local Philippine bank account at the lowest possible cost.

I make money online by working at Freelancer.com as an article writer. After a month and a half I got my accumulated earnings in the amount of $400+ USD.

Here are the step by step instructions on how to transfer money from Freelancer.com to Moneybookers to BPI Unionbank or any other Philippine bank.

Disclaimer: This blog post merely relates my experience in the hopes of sharing valuable insights. Changes might occur in the processes which I may not be privy to. The information here does not represent official matters of fact and should not be construed as official information coming from the entities hereunder mentioned. Any problem, issue or circumstance that arises is solely the responsibility of the reader. By reading the post below, you unconditionally agree that you (the reader) bears full responsibility for whatever action you may be compelled to do.

Important note:

You must first confirm your bank savings account with Moneybookers. Before you can add an account.

Terms:

1. SWIFT CODE - Go here
         a. For BPI it is = BOPIPHMM
         b. For Unionbank it is = UBPHPHMM

2. BANK VERIFICATION CODE = Six character alphanumeric code included in remittance transaction. to find your bank verification code:
         a. Go to your branch of account and inquire about remittance details
         b. Call your bank's customer service
         c. Email your bank's customer service.
* Note, interestingly, bank personnel are mostly unaware of this code. You must inform them that this bank verification code is included in the remittance details. In BPI, it is not included in the Statement of Account. So, provide the following to them:
         a. Date of Remittance
         b. Your name, who remitted, amount
         c. Inform them that the BVC is composed of six characters in the notes.

Step 1

Go to Freelancer.com and sign in to your account.
Under Payments > Select Withdraw Funds

Step 2

The withdrawal request page will appear. Click on Moneybookers.com

Step 3

The only thing you have to do is to enter your Moneybookers.com account which is also your email address and enter the amount you wish to withdraw. *Note that there is no transfer fee from Freelancer.com to your Moneybookers account.

Click on Next

Step 4

After a few days (In my case it was 2 business days), you will receive an email informing you that you have received an amount from Freelancer.com.

Step 5

Login to your Moneybookers.com account and then verify the status of the Deposit.
Click on the Withdraw tab.

Step 6

Click on the Bank Account radio button and then pull down the menu to select the bank account you want to use for your transaction.

Enter the amount you wish to withdraw. Note that, Moneybookers.com will have already deducted the $2.48 fee from the amount that you will withdraw.

Step 7

Confirm information.

Step 8

Enter your birthdate. Click on Next

Step 9

Finished!

The transfer that will occur will be a bank to bank transfer or in financial jargon, wire transfer. In other words, it is a remittance. As such, different banks have different policies and fees with regards to sending money from the Internet to your bank.

BANK CHARGES

Moneybooker's charged $2.42 from my moneybookers account prior to my withdrawal. In Unionbank, I got the amount of PHP 4,186.64. It seems that the exchange rate was PHP43.78 per USD.

So here's the breakdown:

Moneybookers Balance = $ 98.05
Moneybookers Fee        = $   2.42
Amt. to be Remitted       = $ 95.62
Amt. Rcvd. Unbank        = P 4,186.64
Exchange Rate               = P 43.78 = $ 1

Let's check the Interbank rate for April 10, 2010

It Oanda the Interbank rate for April 10, 2010 stands at $ 44.92
In Google the Interbank rate for April 23, 2010 stands at $ 44.41
(I don't know how to get the historical rate for April 10, 2010 on Google.)

So, the formula is:

Standard Interbank Rate less Unionbank Exchange Rate equals Rate Difference multiplied by Amount to be Remitted

Which is:

PHP 44.92 less PHP 43.78 equals PHP 1.14 multiplied by $ 95.62 equals PHP 108.61

That's almost a 1 peso charge for every USD that you remit. To be precise, that's PHP 1.14 for every USD.*

That's alright if you will remit tiny amounts like a $100.00. If you are going to remit ginormous amounts, it would be wise to compare other banks services.

*Disclaimer: My computations are to be considered as my personal understanding of the remittance procedure and not as statements of fact by the respective companies involved. By reading the above, you agree that you will not construe this formula as a definitive guide on standard remittance processes. You also unequivocally and universally hold me the writer of www.dannybuntu.com, free from any claims that may arise from any loss that your decision or your future decisions could entail.

This is only my personal experience and should not be understood as official representation on any of the companies mentioned above. If you think the author has mistakenly included an incorrect fact or computation please do contact me so I could remedy the formula.

To repeat, www.dannybuntu.com or any of its authors DOES NOT REPRESENT ANY OF THE COMPANIES INVOLVED IN ANY CAPACITY.

Don't Worry if You Are Not Yet Making Money Online

Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?

Matthew 6:26 New International Version 1984)

This phrase perhaps is one of the most misunderstood phrases in the Bible. Many may interpret this as a reason for us to not work at all and rely entirely on God's provisions.

There are those who believe that and those who don't. Anyway, here's a nice video I found from youtube that I think fits those who worry too much about making money online:

As a freelance writer who makes money online through sheer hard work (I work from 9 AM to 12 Midnight), I have my own interpretation of the passage.

I see it like this, birds still have to fly to get to their food. They must still strive to look for the seeds or the insects that they rely on to survive.

Making money online is like that, but instead of insects and flying around we must create value. Earning in the online world is still tied to the offline world in so many ways. To create money, affiliate marketers need to sell a product or a service that is most often a tangible product. Even if the affiliate marketer is simply referring a physical product or service that is made by a third person, he or she is still dependent on the existence of the third person.

In short:

Without something of value to sell, the affiliate marketer or the article writer would cease to be.

Some could survive for a long time by using misdirection and time consuming schemes, but the process is not perpetual, and programs which don't sell something valuable will eventually be unraveled as complex Ponzi or Pyramid scheme.

It will all come to an end, the question is:

Do you want to be a part of that?

For those who want me to stop beating around the bush, here's a quick answer on how to determine which making money online system works:

Find out how you can Serve Other's Needs and then give it your Best.

Ask yourself, is my service valuable to others?

If you want my own personal answer:

I personally serve other people on the Internet by writing articles for their websites or blogs. They pay me to do it. I'm not really a writer, I'm just an imaginative guy. Sometimes, they ask me to do odd things, like post in Yahoo Answers, they pay me 20 US cents an answer.

The thing is you don't have to be like me, you don't have to be a writer to make money online. You may have other talents and people will always look for any talent out there. Here is a dreadfully long list of the services you may provide online while working at home:

Why are You Obsessed with Making Money Online?

You must be a regular reader if you are now reading this or must have found this blog on a search engine while searching for the terms, "Make Money Online".

Close your other browser tabs and focus on what I am about to ask:

"Why are you so obsessed with finding a way to make money online?"

Countless people, including me have embarked on this quest for financial freedom.

But we have all been tricked by the lure of money. Yes, that includes you.

You might argue that you need that money, you could do many great things with that money, you need that money to pay for your credit card bill or refinance your home. You've lost your job and have a 2 year old daughter. You're now working 3 day jobs and still come up short to pay the mortgage. You need that money to pay off your College loan. You need that money to pay for your sickness or your loved one's hospital bills.

I'm sure that there are countless other reasons on why you want to earn money online.

If you are one of those who is experiencing that, then repeat this after me:

Money is not an object. Money should not be my goal. Money should not be the focus of my life.

Sure, it is a piece of paper, a metallic coin, or a number flashed on a screen. But consider this, all paper are paper, all metallic coins are metallic coins. But in the end they are all unequal.

  • 1 USD is equal to 0.74 Euro
  • 1 USD is equal to 44 Philippine Pesos
  • 1 USD is equal to 25 million Zimbabwe Dollars

In Zimbabwe, to purchase a kilo of rice, you literally have to haul a sack of Zimbabwean Dollars to pay for it. Can you imagine what it would take to purchase an iPad, a car, or a house in Zimbabwe?

Money is not an object.

Paper is an object. Metal coins are objects. But money, is valuation.
As a group of people, we assign value to everything and agree (or disagree) that the value is good or bad. Whether it is service or a product, people assign value and use money as a unit of measurement

We use this unit of measurement to assign value to a product or a service.

You may have been promised a few Dollars if you click on advertisements everyday.
You may have been promised hundreds of Dollars if you just sign up for that online program.
You may have been promised thousands of Dollars if you complete a survey.

But ask this to yourself:

Am I creating something valuable with what I am doing?

Who did you benefit by clicking on those web banners? What value did you give when you completed that survey? How much value have you dispersed by creating a link in a forum?

A few cents? A few dollars? Many Dollars?

Unknowingly, we have all just perpetrated a system wherein only a small group of people are making money. And we are doing this at our own expense. You might say that you didn't spend anything - oh, yes you did. You spent your time working for their goals. You spent your time increasing their coffers.
Think of it this way, if everybody was earning thousands of Dollars online as they claimed they have easily by just doing the above mentioned, then there would be no economic recession in the United States, there would be no unemployment, there would be no suffering, hunger, and everything will be just fine if everybody just clicked on banner ads, complete surveys and created backlinks everywhere.

There will be a utopian society which does nothing but spend the whole day online.

Think about it. I will leave this hanging as you ponder my points. Don't be disheartened if I leave you hanging. You might be expecting me to tell you what to do next because I know you still HAVE to make money online.
Ponder, reflect and let the words that I have spoken seep deep in your consciousness. Just relax and chill out. Everything will be just fine.

I will get back to you soon.

Get $100.00 if You Win Tech Source from Bohol's Coolest Linux Workspace Contest

Jun Auza, of Tech Source from Bohol, is giving away $100.00 (USD) to the person with the coolest Linux workspace picture. The rules are simple:

1. Your workspace photos should be at least 450 pixels wide. You should send them HERE.

2. To verify that the workspace is yours and you are really using Linux, the computer screen from your photo (or from one of your photos) should show a Linux desktop with a web browser open and browsing Tech Source.

Images that are Photoshopped or should I say GIMPed will not be accepted. But of course, simple editing such as cropping and resizing is allowed.

3. The description is also very important. As much as possible, make it brief but informative.

4. After we have accepted your submission, you are required to post the following sentence at your blog, or if you don't have a blog, at one of your social networking pages like Facebook, Twitter, Identi.ca, etc.:

I joined the “The $100.00 (USD) Coolest Linux Workspace Contest” at Tech Source.

Note: Aside from the sentence, placing the "http://www.junauza.com/" link (URL) is necessary but it is up to you on where or how you will add it.

After doing the above tasks, you should notify us via email and give us the link (URL) to where you posted the required sentence and the Tech Source URL.

5. Although it helps, your workstation doesn't need to have a powerful specs or ultra-huge monitors to be considered as cool. Uniqueness of location and working environment will also be a key factor in choosing the winner. Like, your workstation could be a flimsy OLPC laptop, but if it is inside an igloo, that would make you a strong contender.

6. The exact date of the end of the contest period will be announced soon.

7. The contest starts today. So if you think that your Linux workspace is cool enough, JOIN NOW for a chance to win an amazing $100 (USD)!

Pinoy News: First American Football Game in the Philippines - April 23, 2010

After being barraged with countless inspiring movies about American Football. The capsule is heading straight for a touchdown here in Manila. Started by Mr. Bernardo “Dodi” Palma II, it's high time that Filipinos are given something to watch instead of Cockfighting, Pacquiao and what was that Philippine Basketball League?

Balyahan, upakan, tadjakan, takbuhan at batuhan.

The 10 Most Valuable Pinoy Websites

Last Sunday, April 11, 2010 I've been scavenging the net for the best way possible to earn online and which Pinoys are making a killing on the make money online bandwagon. As usual I've been barraged with the usual retinue of Free Ebooks about SEO and Affiliate Marketing. I know you know the drill.

Click here, watch a goofy guy give you a long speech on why you want to earn money online, and get sold the same mantra over and over again.

I got tired at exactly 5:00 PM Philippine Time and that's when I thought of something. Short of their claims of earning thousands of thousands of Dollars online, then there must be a way to find how much these Pinoy Websites are earning online. By now, there must be pinoy online millionaires. This is my first attempt to find who these people are and guesstimate how much their websites are worth.

Disclaimer: Short of prying into their bank accounts or Income Tax Returns, there's not really a good way to determine how much these Pinoy Websites are really earning online.

Various factors affect the computation of the websites' respective values.
For our purposes, we're going to use three site value estimation websites:

These websites place a value on websites using different criteria. Just head on over to the respective websites to have a feel of how they estimate the value of a website.

Several other factors affect the real valuation of these websites. As you may have noticed, these websites, are mostly comprised of major mass media corporations. There's Philippine Daily Inquirer, Philippine Star, GMA News, and ABS-CBN. These are not really the inspiring make money online startups that we'd like to see, but some of them are.

Observations:

  1. In Google's eyes, content is king. Therefore the websites with the most up to date and most reliable information are naturally those run by newspaper agencies with salaried news reporters and journalists.
  2. Though these media websites may be earning a lot in ad revenue, they still have to compensate their support staff. So most of these income may go to their journalists and reporters.
  3. It's interesting how sulit.com.ph has consistently topped the rankings. Personally, I find it annoying to search in Google and be brought by a link to a sulit.com.ph page with no relevant results. This website is now steadily going down in popularity even though it is still a dominant player.
  4. I have excluded two websites from the Philippine's Top Sites, namely ebay.ph and http://grou.ps/raven because ebay.ph is not a Pinoy Website and the latter, if I am not mistaken, is a subdomain.
